How to Take Care of Your Teeth After a Root Canal

Root canal treatment in South Delhi

If you’re reading this, chances are you’ve just had a Root canal treatment in South Delhi — maybe even here at dentem clinic with Dr. Tanvir Singh or Dr. Gunita Singh.

First things first — well done. You faced the fear, sat through the procedure, and now that nagging toothache is behind you. But what happens next?

At our clinic, patients often ask:
"Doctor, now that the root canal is done… am I okay?"
And our answer is always: "Almost. Just a little more care, and you’ll be completely fine."

Here’s a gentle guide we put together to help you heal well and feel confident about your next steps.

That Crown Appointment? Please Don’t Skip It

After the root canal, your tooth is clean and infection-free — but it’s also a little weak. Right now, it has a temporary filling or cap. That’s like putting a bandage on.

To protect it for the long term, we need to fit a permanent crown. Think of it as a protective cover — it strengthens your tooth and prevents it from cracking or getting re-infected.

If you delay this step, you risk breaking the tooth or ending up back in the chair. And we don’t want that, right?

Be Kind to Your Tooth — Especially While Eating

Your treated tooth is still settling down. So for the next few days:

  • Chew from the opposite side

  • Stick to soft, non-crunchy food

  • Avoid very hot or very cold items

Khichdi, upma, curd rice, soup — these are your best friends right now. Nothing fancy. Just soft, warm comfort food.

A Bit of Soreness? That’s Totally Normal

Many of our patients ask, "Why is it still sore when I bite down?"
The truth is, your gums and jaw have gone through some work. A little tenderness is completely normal for a few days.

Take the painkiller if prescribed, and use an ice pack on the outside of your cheek if there’s any swelling. It should ease up soon.

But — if the pain gets worse after a few days, or comes back suddenly, don’t ignore it. Call us. We’ll take a quick look and put your mind at ease.

Keep That Area Clean — Gently

Don’t stop brushing — in fact, gentle brushing is super important right now. Just be soft and careful around the treated tooth.

You can also rinse your mouth with warm salt water once or twice a day. It helps with healing and keeps bacteria away.

Watch Out for These Signs

Most root canal recoveries are smooth. But just so you know — if you notice any of the following:

  • A sharp or throbbing pain

  • Swelling that doesn’t go down

  • Bad taste or smell from the tooth

  • The filling feels loose or cracked

…then give us a call. You don’t need to wait or suffer. At dentem clinic, we’d rather hear from you early than fix a big issue later.

Avoid Sticky, Crunchy, or Chewy Stuff (Just for Now)

Until your final crown is placed, please avoid things like:

  • Chikki

  • Popcorn

  • Toast

  • Gum

  • Papad

These can damage the temporary filling. Once your crown is on, you can enjoy most of your favourites again — just chew mindfully.

You’re Not Alone in This

At Dentem clinic, we’ve done thousands of root canal cases — and each patient has a different story, a different level of worry, a different kind of smile.

But one thing stays the same: we’re here, always.
Whether it’s Dr. Tanvir Singh explaining your X-ray patiently, or Dr. Gunita Singh making sure you feel calm — you’re in safe hands.

We don’t just fix teeth. We take care of people.

You did the tough part — you got the treatment done.
Now, with just a little follow-up care and a final visit for your crown, you’re all set to keep that tooth strong for years.
